The Library responds to the needs of users and instigates ebook purchases such as Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA) and Patron/Demand Driven Acquisition (PDA/DDA) as appropriate. With EBA, users have access to content for a set period, usually 12 months, and at the end of that period the Library reviews the usage data to select and buy the most popular titles. With PDA/DDA, we pay a lump sum upfront and it gets spent as and when users read the e-books until all the money has gone.

In each instance the titles are made available via Library Discover to enable users to retrieve and link through to full text content:

  • JSTOR – DDA
In response to Social Science departments need for ebook content. Criteria includes titles published since 2015, contains roughly 17,000 titles across the Social Sciences to browse and demand. Search Discover for titles.
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion collection – DDA
In response to LJMU strategy, established 2021 with Proquest. Criteria includes titles published since 2015, contains roughly 8,000 titles to browse and demand. (see blog post and themed collection)

Can these demand purchased titles be added to Reading lists?
Yes, we encourage LJMU users to search and retrieve all e-books through Library Discover. When an ebook purchasing project ends the Library will ensure any titles added to Reading Lists are considered alongside those with high usage for purchase in perpetuity. Please talk to the Academic Engagement Librarians for help and information on setting up online reading lists.
