You access eBooks using the Library’s single search tool, Library Discover.

  • Go to the Library website and scroll down to the Library Discover search box. Enter your search terms: title, author or subject etc.

  • Click on Sign in and enter your LJMU username (in the format 'username@ljmu.ac.uk') and password. If you are on campus, when you click on Sign in you will be automatically logged in.

  • Filter your results to Books (Electronic) under Resource Type on the left-hand side.

  • View the full record by either clicking on the book’s title or on Available Online. Under View It, you will see a link to the eBook. The wording of the link will vary depending on the eBook provider. It may be Full text available at: View full text, or specific to a particular eBook provider, e.g. Full text available at: Cambridge University Press Online Books.

  • Click on the link and log in with your LJMU username (username@ljmu.ac.uk) and password if prompted to.

  • You will have the option of either reading the eBook online and/or downloading a PDF, depending on the eBook provider. Reading online is usually easier; however downloading a PDF offers the advantage of also being able to read it offline (i.e. when you are not connected to the Internet). You can often download just a chapter rather than the whole book. When downloading an eBook you will sometimes be required to use an eBook reader application, e.g. Adobe Digital Editions (available on the LJMU network).

You may notice a green ‘e’ logo visible on some book jacket cover images, this suggests we have an electronic version of the title in stock. You’ll notice the ‘e’ logo on the book cover in the ‘Also Available As’ and ‘More by this author’ sections once you’ve clicked into a particular title from the list of search results.

Please note: Collaborative partner access to library resources varies from partner to partner and resource to resource. Collaborative Staff and Students (Collaborative Partners) may not have access to all library resources.
