acsm files are a protected file format and can only be read by using the free Adobe Digital Editions program. The acsm file does not contain the text you requested, rather it contains data for the Adobe Content Server authorising access to your requested document.
On Student PCs
Adobe Digital Editions is available on all LJMU Student PCs via the LJMU AppPlayer.
Using Own Device
Download and install Adobe Digital Editions for free from here:
https://www.adobe.com/uk/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html
To add a acsm file to Adobe Digital Editions:
1. Open the email containing the URLLINK.acsm file or link and download it, note where it is downloaded to
2. Start Adobe Digital Editions
3. Click ‘File’, then ‘add to library’
4. Navigate to where the downloaded acsm file is, make sure the drop down is set to ’Adobe Content Server Message’
5. Click on the acsm file, and click open
6. If an ‘Authorize our Computer’ window appears then click the box next to ‘I want to authorise my computer without an ID’, then click ‘Authorize’
7. If prompted to ‘Authorize Your Computer without a Vendor ID’, then click ‘Authorize’
8. You may get a successful ‘Your Computer Has Been Authorized’ Message, click OK
9. You should now be able to read the contents of the digital document you requested.
Please note:
British Library documents are only available for the time period mentioned in the email. This is counted from the date you received them. Printing of the documents may also be restricted.
